General Discussion

Adopting Missionaries?

The 3rd World Poverty group is interested in "adopting" a missionary or missionary group through (at least) this summer. We are interested in raising funds, providing access to material goods, writing letters for encouragement, and praying regularly.

We feel that this would allow us to continue our efforts to confront global poverty while we as a group are spread around the country for summer break as well as help the church continue its commitment to these ministries.

Does anyone in the Hopwood community have a suggestion for a missionary, missionary couple, or missionary group that we could assist? Who is in the most need right now?

Divestment Campaigns

Some of us in the poverty class have been discussing various divestment campaigns. We thought that perhaps the broader community might have some ideas on the issue.

Two campaigns we have considered are the following:

1) Sudan divestment--because we shouldn't do business with companies that do business with the government of Sudan, which funds the Janjaweed. For information, see the following links:

Does anyone know if Milligan, ETSU, and/or ESR are divested?

2) Caterpillar divestment--they make armored versions of their regular equipment for Israel to use against Palestinians. See the following for more information:

Gasoline

Hey all - we've had some minor discussions about what "type" of gasoline is the best for us to purchase (the least-harmful to children and all living things) and whatnot. But we've had little research or conclusions, Can you add to this discussion?
